Maestro (2003)

 

Maestro (86:52min) originally released in 2003, chronicles the rise of DJ culture in New York City during the late 1980’s. Featuring appearances from Larry Levan, David Mancuso, Frankie Knuckles, Nicky Sciano, François K and more, director Josell Ramos takes an in-depth look at the people and locations synonymous with early club and DJ culture.

Paradise Garage. Larry Levan had a ten-year residency at this famous club, an early prototype of now plentiful modern dance clubs. Ramos’ documentary features never before seen footage of this legendary hotspot, along with other clubs such as The Loft. Levan and his contemporaries developed incredible followings, acting as pioneers in the realm DJ culture.

Maestro, tells the story of how a group of people found refuge and a call for life outside the mainstream. What evolved was a scene that set the ground work for what was to come in dance music culture worldwide, a rare insight into the secret underground world. It's the first time this story is told in a motion Picture. Opting for a more personal and candid approach, MAESTRO shows the true history of the people through a realistic creative aesthetic.
