May 25, 1997 - BBC Essential Mix with live PA from Kraftwerk at Tribal Gathering, Luton, UK
Live PA from Kraftwerk recorded at the Trans Europe area at the Tribal Gathering '97 event and broadcasted by BBC Radio 1 - Essential Mix on May 25, 1997. Other artist that showed up in this special Tribal Gathering edition of the Essential Mix were the Sneaker Pimps, Justin Robertson, DJ Sneak, Pete Tong, Paul Oakenfold and Way Out West, consisting of Nick Warren and Jodie Wisternoff. Also livesets from Nick Warren, Fluke, Speedy J and Orbital recorded at this event can be found on this site. It is not clear if these were broadcasted by BBC radio 1 Essential Mix, but after the Paul Oakenfold set the presenter Annie Nightingale mentiones that Fluke and Speedy J are upcoming after Way Out West. So it is not unlikely that these were broadcasted by the BBC.
The electronic band Kraftwerk was founded in 1970 in Düsseldorf, Germany. In the 70s they were real pioneers of electronic musiic and they are considered one of the most important and influential bands of their genre, often described as “the godfathers of electronic music”. Kraftwerk’ sound is minimalistic and strictly electronic; it combines driving, repetitive rhythms with catchy melodies and vocals usually sung through a vocoder. The current line-up consists of Ralf Hütter (the only original member), Fritz Hilpert, Henning Schmitz and Stefan Pfaffe. The other founding member Florian Schneider left the band in 2008.
